There is then the added problem of reliability, lets face it, we have all at some point been happily surfing the web wirelessly when our connection dropped out on us for no reason!

Wireless N - This is the latest wireless standard and with MIMO technology (multiple input multiple output) it offers speeds of up to 300mbps. However if you look close at the small print on many of the new wireless n products, you will see that 300mbps is the quoted speed from the IEEE spec and that actual speeds will vary.
Actual speed vs maximum possible speed - The problem with wireless is that these two can vary greatly, with wired we know what were getting and its a lot less common for speeds to vary, unless you have faulty cables etc. However, with wireless there are many potential problems that can affect speeds. Line of sight is probably the most important one, how often is it that your laptop has a perfect line of sight with your router? probably not very often, therefore your wireless signal usually has to travel through walls and other obstacles to get its signal to the router. The problem with this is that we never know how much our signal is being affected as we cannot see it!
Realistically speaking the maximum throughput your going to get with a wireless N card is around 100mbps. Don't get me wrong though, this is a big improvement from the average 25mbps you would get with a wireless G card.
Do we really need this kind of speed? - Most people will buy Wireless N with the wrong intentions, they will think that their internet will miraculously speed up once they have a flashy new wireless N card, sadly this is not going to be the case for most people! Ultimately your bottleneck is always going to be your internet line and this is the point where your speed is getting capped. Lets say you have a 10mb internet line, well technically speaking your never going to need your wireless to send data faster than 10mbps, anything else is a waste right? Because your internet pipe is not capable of sending data out faster than 10mbps.
Now on the other hand if you have a home network and you transfer files, play games etc via 2 local machines then wireless N could give you the added boost you need. But if you supply use your wireless network to surf then web then I wouldn't bother with Wireless N right now, chances are you wont see any benefits.
